We saw a beastly crow
perched upon a naked tree
staring at its watchers
you, my dear, and me.
You shuddered there and stopped
a thousand fears rose to mind
of death and loss to come
all of which, in little time.
But I beheld it calm,
this thing you did abhor,
and smiled, laughed, and told you
“Tis a crow, and nothing more.”
